Calling all ocean geeks - Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute opens its doors!
The August 14, 2010 MBARI open house will feature science and technology exhibits, deep-sea videos, research presentations, robotic submarines, children's activities, ocean career information, and much more. MBARI staff, scientists, and engineers will share their excitement about the institute's work.
Visitors can view MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROV) Ventana and Doc Ricketts, and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). MBARI's research vessels will also be on view at the dock with related displays. Visitors can also find out about the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program and a new marine environmental organization, the Center for Ocean Solutions.
The fun starts at noon and lasts until 5pm. MBARI is located in Moss Landing, halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey off Highway 1, not far from the Moss Landing power station.
Recently MBARI has been helping with the Gulf oil spill:
In late May, MBARI's Division of Marine Operations, under an agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), sent a high-tech robotic submersible to the oily waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The goal is to collect information about the oil plume from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig accident for NOAA.
Although satellites and aircraft can help show the extent of the spill at the surface, MBARI's autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) will help researchers understand the nature and extent of any plumes of oil that may be hidden beneath the surface of the ocean.
