Being stalked by a harbor seal, and loving every minute

A whale jumping out of the water
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is home to an astonishing variety of sea creatures, as well as the beautiful, rhythmically swaying kelp forest. Only kayakers paddling along Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf get can get an up close look at this wonder of nature teeming with wildlife.
Harbor seals pop up to say hello, swim alongside you, or rest sleepily on the rocks along the shore. Diving pelicans put on a show. Watch carefully for a raft of otters rolling and playing in the kelp. The remnants of the old canneries along Cannery Row are reminiscent of a time gone by; it's easy to imagine the hustle and bustle during the heyday of sardine fishing. And you'll get a look at the Aquarium from the other side.
Think this experience is pricey? It's not; day long rentals, including gear, instruction and orientation is just $30/person at Adventures By The Sea. A terrific 2½ hour tour with a knowledgeable docent starts at $50/person. For more information, please visit www.adventuresbythesea.com.
