A whale of an opportunity - don't miss it!
There’s no better place to see these magnificent creatures than the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This great wildlife migration means herds of gray whales can be spotted from shore as they journey northward along the coast, heading to Baja California’s warm waters, some of them to give birth, as part of their 14,000-mile annual round-trip.
Both the Monterey Bay Inn and the Spindrift Inn are ocean front – with perfect seats (binoculars included) for watching the whales go by. And there are lots of terrific whale watching boat trips to get you a bit more up close and personal.
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is part of a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. Stretching from Marin to Cambria, the MBNMS encompasses a shoreline length of 276 miles and 6,094 square miles of ocean. Supporting one of the world's most diverse marine ecosystems, it is home to numerous mammals, seabirds, fishes, invertebrates and plants in a remarkably productive coastal environment. It’s part of magical Monterey!
