Take a stroll or guided tour through Cannery Row, one of the most historic destinations in California with its roots in the fishing industry. The story of Cannery Row goes beyond John Steinbeck’s novel since this area underwent several significant changes and redevelopments over the years. Today, visitors can get a taste of history by shopping boutiques, visiting wine tasting rooms and enjoying California cuisine at some of the area’s top restaurants.

Cannery Row’s past can be traced to the early 19th century with the migration of Chinese fishing families that settled at China Point. The American Tin Cannery was constructed in 1927 and still stands today. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that the Hotel Del Monte was constructed, followed by the construction of The Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa in 1901 which turned the region into a popular tourism destination.

The fishing and cannery industry exploded shortly after and was soon field by wartime demand for canned goods. John Steinbeck Bought Cannery Row in his novel by the same name in 1945 and the area flourished again in the 50s and 60s with the development of warehouse and restaurant districts.

Today, visitors can explore many of the old cannery sites and a number of newer attractions, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium and upscale eateries on the famous ‘Restaurant Row’.
