Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news... The Carmel Bach Fest is coming!
The Carmel Bach Festival, July 17-31, is one of the oldest music festivals in the West and the most important American Bach Festival. Comprised of national and international performing artists, the Festival Orchestra and Chorale, along with the beloved local Chorus and exceptional Youth Chorus, deliver exuberant performances of rare power and intimate beauty. During the 16 day festival, 30,000 attendees enjoy a wide range of concerts, recitals, interactive talks, master classes, social events, and educational experiences.
This very special season honors the artistic legacies of both Maestro Bruno Weil and Concertmaster Elizabeth “Libby” Wallfisch. For almost two decades the Festival has benefited from the gifts of their musical partnership, energy and joyful spirit.
Adding to this extraordinary season, world-renowned cellist Raphael Wallfisch (and husband of Libby) makes a rare Festival appearance performing all six Bach Cello Suites and joining Festival string principals in a stunning candlelight concert of Schubert’s sublime Quintet. The aptly-named Bittersweet Gala and Best of the Fest commemorative concert invites both new and long-time fans and friends of Bruno, Libby, and the Festival to a rousing closing celebration.
Set in the scenic beauty of the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel-by-the-Sea is the home of the Carmel Bach Festival. The main concert venue is the recently renovated Sunset Theater in the heart of Carmel. Other performance venues in Carmel include the historic Carmel Mission Basilica, All Saints Church, the Church of the Wayfarer, and Carmel Presbyterian Church. In Pebble Beach performances will be held at the awesome Church in the Forest. The Festival reaches out into the community by playing concerts in Monterey, Salinas, Seaside, and King City.
“...to make divine things human and human things divine; such is Bach, the greatest and purest moment in music of all time.” – Pablo Casals
