Celebrate Earth Month with Hot Pink Flamingos
With the passing of the Spring Equinox in March, we can finally send Winter on its way and welcome Spring.
And just in time for Earth Day (and Earth Month, as April is quickly becoming known) Hot Pink Flamingos have invaded Monterey!! They’re tall, stunning, and spend most of their time standing on one wobbly -looking leg. Did you know that flamingos are only as pink as the food they eat? Pink shrimp or pink Champagne anyone?
In the Aquarium’s recently opened exhibit, aptly named “Hot Pink Flamingos”, you’ll be mesmerized by the colorful coral reef and multi-colored sea animals living in and around it. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to watch a very clever little fish dig a home out of the rocks –grabbing rocks one-by-one and ‘tossing’ them aside, burrowing further and further into the ocean floor. Watch bright yellow butterfly fish, tangerine-hued anemone fish and other exotic animals as they dart about in this vibrant coral reef community. The 10-foot-long exhibit showcases the textures, colors and motion of living corals. An entire world thrives in its cracks and bends.
Farther on you can catch a glimpse of animals who call the vast ocean their home: green sea turtles that travel up to 1,600 miles between their nesting beaches and feeding grounds, and the spotted jellies that ride on the currents in huge clouds of drifting fluidity.
Love penguins? Then you’ll love watching the exhibit’s dapper divers plunge to catch their favorite fatty fishes. This colony of Magellanic penguins includes survivors from a group of birds that washed up on the shores of Brazil—thousands of miles from their breeding colonies in Patagonia. You’ll get the chance to watch these birds ‘fly’ underwater faster than some fishes.
And all along this great adventure you’ll learn how climate change is affecting our oceans, and how simple actions can help preserve this beautiful, complex world.
The best deal for tickets is at the Inns of Monterey – ask for details when you make your reservation or check in. Happy Earth Month!
