Museum, Art Festivals and Museums in Monterey

Art, music and culture converge in the Monterey Peninsula. Monterey has been a past and present home to many artists and creative individuals including photographers Ansel Adams, Edward Cole and Brett Weston; painters Armin Carl Hansen, William Ritschel, Francis McComas and E. Charlton Fortune; sculptor Jo Mora, creator of the monumental bronze sarcophagus of Father Serra in Carmel Mission; even cartoonist Hank Ketcham, whose pen brought to life Dennis the Menace. Local Monterey authors like John Steinbeck, Robinson Jeffers, Robert A. Heinlein, Henry Miller, Ed Ricketts, and Robert Louis Stevenson have all lived in and written about the Monterey Peninsula.

Enrich your visit by stopping by a local art gallery, museum, library, festival event, historic adobe, or public garden and find inspiration in the creativity that flourishes throughout Monterey County.

Stop him…he’s painting on the walls!!
Calm down - In this case, it’s okay. That’s because the painter is renowned Los Angeles-based artist Mark Licari and the walls are at the Monterey Museum of Art’s beautiful La Mirada location. In the inaugural work of a new program called In Process, Licari is painting directly on the Museum’s huge Dart gallery walls, creating a site-specific mural. For the next two weeks, Mark will use La Mirada as his vibrant laboratory where he will create an exhibition consisting of paintings, drawings, sculptures and his ephemeral mural that will weave together a fantastic, elaborate narrative. Keep up-to-date on Mark’s exciting installation on www.montereyart.org Friday, October 9, 6-8pm is the preview. Licari will lecture and sign exhibit catalogues on Saturday, October 10 at 11:30am. Tickets are on sale at www.monteryart.org. Read More about Stop him…he’s painting on the walls!!

Where o where in Monterey?
There is now yet another compelling reason to visit Made in Monterey at the Monterey Museum of Art-Pacific Street. Besides the beauty of the sweeping 50th Anniversary exhibition and engaging new family gallery activities, locals and visitors alike can try their hand at a contest titled Where Oh Where in Monterey? Monterey’s glorious landscape and romantic architecture has sparked the creativity of generations of artists. While many of these historic scenes are immediately recognizable, others have changed over the decades. Participants can put their sleuthing skills to the test by correctly identifying nine different locations selected from works in the exhibition. Entry forms that correctly identify all locations depicted will be entered into a drawing to win a one-night stay at one of the luxurious Inns of Monterey. Read More about Where o where in Monterey?

California’s oldest church reopens after $7.2 million renovation
Monterey’s Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo, also known as the Royal Presidio Chapel, reopened recently after an extensive two year restoration. Work included seismic retrofitting, renovations to alleviate the moisture problems that plagued the chapel for more than 200 years, rebuilding of 80 percent of the rear walls, and the removal of layers of paint and plaster to reveal original decorative painting. Blocks of those paintings have been preserved for viewing. Read More about California’s oldest church reopens after $7.2 million renovation
