Thistles can be fun! the 51st Castroville Artichoke Fest is May 15 & 16
Ever wondered whats in those expansive fields on either side of the road as you drive Highway 1 to Monterey? It's the amazing artichoke. This Festival celebrates its thistly greatness. Perfect for the entire family, this annual celebration offers fun for everyone starting May 15th. Cooking demos, farm tours, 3-D art exhibits and competitions, music and a farmer's market ensure a tasty day. Don't miss the Annual Artichoke Festival Parade on Sunday, May 16th, starting at 9:45 A.M.
The origin of artichokes is unknown, though they are said to have come from North Africa, where they are still found growing wild. The Choke traveled the world, taking a long journey through Greece, Rome, Naples, Venice, France, Netherlands, and eventually to the English gardens of Henry VIII. Despite its prevalence on the Monterey Peninsula, the artichoke wasn't introduced to North American until the 19th century; to Louisiana by the French and to California by the Spanish. Today California grows 100% of the Chokes enjoyed in the United States, and 80% of those come from Monterey County.
Boiled, steamed, or stuffed with sausage, the artichoke is hard to beat. Let us know about your favorite ways to enjoy these prickly, delicious treats!
