Gioachino Rossini, Samuel Barber, and Beethoven come to the central coast in January with several exciting performances by violinist Judith Ingolfsson and the Monterey Symphony. Catch the budget-friendly rehearsal on January 23, 2010 at 3 pm or the first performance that same day at 8 pm in Sherwood Hall, Salinas. Two more performances follow: January 24 at 3 pm and January 25, 2010 at 8 pm in the Sunset Theater, Carmel. Exciting violinist Judith Ingolfsson is breaking attendance records wherever she performs. Her combination of natural talent, profound musicality, technical mastery and beautiful stage presence will long be remembered. In 1998 she won the Gold Medal in the prestigious International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and every since this Icelandic-American violinist has established herself worldwide as an artist of uncompromising musical maturity. As for the concert, it's not to be missed; the overture from Rossini’s La scala di seta (The Silken Ladder), known best for its prominent oboe solo, produces pure joy with its farsa comica sentimentality. Beethoven's First Symphony, at its first performance called "the most interesting concert in a long time,” is one of his most exciting early works.
