Historic Adobes Abound in Monterey
With its rich history and stunning natural wildlife, Monterey Bay has much to offer adventures travelers. One aspect of Monterey that often goes overlooked is our remarkable architecture. Discover the classic splendor of Monterey by touring our antique adobes.
Monterey Bay’s historic adobes have been restored by the dedicated people at the Monterey History and Art Association. Some of the oldest structures in Monterey still stand, including the Royal Presidio Chapel which was constructed by the Spanish in 1794 and is the first architect-designed building in California. Monterey also hosts California’s very first theater, built in the 1840s.
Casa Munras Hotel & Spa is also rich with history. The Casa Munras was built in 1824 by Spanish diplomat Don Estéban Munras and was built with handmade adobe bricks. This home was one of the first built outside the walls of the longstanding Monterey Presidio, and was owned by three generations of the Munras family until 1941.
Although many renovations have taken place, the historical roots have been protected; our gorgeous Marbella Meeting Room features an original adobe wall from 1824. For more about the stirring history of Casa Munras and the Don Estéban Munras family, visit our website’s history page and don’t forget to book your stay today to experience the classic old town feel before heading out to take a walking tour of Monterey’s antique adobes!
